Gene Burnett at the Wild Goose

 Posted: 9:10 AM September 15, 2011

Music has played several roles in the life of singer and songwriter Gene Burnett. It has been a career, a hobby, a form of therapy and, sometimes, just plain fun.

Since he started performing in 1975, the Ashland guitarist has written more than 500 songs, recorded 25 albums and shows no signs of stopping. In addition to teaching tai chi for a living, Burnett plays regular gigs and open mics at Tabu, The Wild Goose, Talent's Downtowne Coffehouse and other Ashland venues. He will perform his usual "third Wednesday" show at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at The Wild Goose, 2365 Ashland St., Ashland.

Burnett's songs lean toward the pop side of folk music. He applies "balance," also the underlying principle of tai chi, to his songwriting, which manages to be funny and serious, sweet and edgy, emotional and intellectual.
